Selectman Recall Vote Sat Sep 29 2007

For those who don't remember: Oak Pointers vote at the COA Center, 558 Plymouth Street.

Directions

Come March, we'll be voting right here in the Oak Point Clubhouse, but for now it's still the "Leonard E. Simmons Senior Multi-Service Center".

Polls are open 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. We are Precinct One. That may or may not change in March, but on Saturday, we are Precinct One.

If you have no idea who you are voting for or why, see Board of Selectmen Candidates.

YOU NEED TO VOTE IF YOU WANT TO KEEP THE INCUMBENTS. Apparently some Oak Pointers think that it's not necessary to vote if you don't want to replace the existing Selectmen: it most definitely IS necessary! If only the people who want this recall show up to vote, the sitting Selectmen will be recalled - your vote is important.

Also: I've been told the ballot could be confusing. Read it carefully and don't be afraid to ask a poll worker for help if you need it.

...

Well, the ballot was a bit confusing. For each candidate, you had to choose whether or not you wanted to recall them. However, even if you chose not to recall, you still should have voted FOR that candidate from the choices below. If the recalls are unsuccessful, that part won't matter, but it would matter if there are enough votes for recall. Confused? Look at it this way:

If the recall for a candidate doesn't pass (more votes for "don't recall" than "recall") then the votes for specific candidates to replace them don't matter. That makes sense.

But if the recall succeeds, those votes do matter. Let's say 1,000 people voted, and 600 voted to recall incumbent Wayne Perkins, while 400 voted against recalling him. Let's say that of the 600 recall votes, 202 voted for challenger Jessie Powell, 199 voted for Leonard Ruprecht, and 199 voted for Greg Stevens. If all of the 400 "don't recall" voters also voted for Wayne, he'd win the election in spite of losing the recall - effectively he'd replace himself.. but if only 150 of the 400 chose him (they ONLY did the "don't recall" part), he'd lose. Jessie Powell would win because she had the most votes.
